9-01-2017Labor Day out WestIt’s time to go to the Big Bend area again for the long holiday weekend.  Make your way on your own Friday, Sept. 1, to the Ft. Davis-Marfa-Alpine area. Rooms are already getting scarce for the holiday weekend, so don’t delay finding one if you plan to go. Meet 9 am, Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Hotel Paisano in Marfa at 207 Highland St. There is plenty of parking in the street in front.  Some may choose to enjoy the local area, while some will pop over to El Paso to check off the Miata Challenge location there. We can all get together again in Ft. Davis around 6 pm to eat at one of their several good restaurants.  Then those who are interested will head up to the McDonald’s Observatory for their Star Party. https://mcdonaldobservatory.org/visitors/programs/star-parties. If you are not interested in the observatory, the Marfa Lights viewing area located between Marfa and Alpine is a popular nighttime stop. Sunday we will meet once more in Marfa at the Hotel Paisano at 9 am for a run of the famous River Road from Presidio to Lajitas with dinner at the Starlight Theater in Terlingua. Those who do not want to zip through one of the curviest roads in Texas may want to spend Sunday stopping in Marathon to look over their historic hotel and then head down to Big Bend National Park.  Monday we will head back home and some will stop at the Miata Challenge site in Midland for a late lunch.  Dinner is available at the Perini Ranch in Buffalo Gap if anyone wants to stop at that Miata Challenge site south of Abilene.
